Who We Are

Our Mission

The mission of the YMCA is “to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.”

YMCA History

The YMCA was founded in 1844 in London, England by George Williams in order to save clothing store clerks who had come to the city from the countryside, from the wicked life on the street of the big industrial evil with good immorality with Christian values.  In it’s beginning, membership was exclusive – 12 young Protestant men comprised the original charter members.  Much of their time was spent through the YMCA involved Bible Study.

Our History

The Shelby County YMCA (in association with the Decatur County Family YMCA in Greensburg, Indiana) is one the oldest non-profit agencies in southeastern Indiana.  The Decatur County Family YMCA was incorporated on July 27, 1914 when Nelson and Carrie Mowrey donated $100,000 to the city of Greensburg for construction.  The Shelby County YMCA opened its doors at 2120 Intelliplex Drive in Shelbyville on July 2021.

Our YMCA family is dedicated to serving the city of Shelbyville and its surrounding communities by utilizing the facilities and resources it has to offer while always looking for ways to improve each area by obtaining the highest standards in programming, equipment and staffing.

YMCA Movement

The YMCA movement currently serves 21 million Americans and 45 million people in 120 countries through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility with affordable preschool programs, youth sports, fitness programs, bible studies, summer day camps, an indoor pool and other activities designed for individuals and familes.
